Cuban Honeymoon – Part 3: Diving Cayo Largo

This is the final post in this three-part series. The first part covered the diving at Punta Perdiz, near Playa Giron in the Bay of Pigs. The second part was about snorkelling in the Bay of Pigs.

Cayo Largo is a small island off the south coast of Cuba with no indigenous population. It is the opposite of the sort of place I would normally look to go to – a resort entirely fabricated for tourists. Cuban Honeymoon – Part 1: Diving the Bay of Pigs

I recently got married, and as is customary organised a dive trip honeymoon to relax in the aftermath. I will spare you the romance and the details of our visits to Havana and Trinidad (the city in Central Cuba, not the country) as you can find plenty of information about those places elsewhere (and if I do write it up I will add a link later). The hopes and dreams of divers who come to explore the waters of Gozo and Comino are as varied as the many places in which to do so. With wrecks, bays, caverns and general topography there is something for all tastes. Even after over 13 years of diving here there is much left for me to explore and still lots to see in what is a constantly changing environment. ‘One of the few diving titles that everyone should own’

We scuba dive only by virtue of technology. Diving equipment directly affects our comfort, efficiency and safety underwater and at the surface. And yet, despite our dependence upon it, we often overlook diving equipment’s importance, a case of not seeing the wood for the trees. Like most experienced divers I have owned and rented lots of scuba gear, but I have also taught people to use it, sold it, written about it in books and reviewed it for diving magazines. In my experience there is a huge information vacuum that this new guide, Diving Equipment: Choice, maintenance and function by Jonas Arvidsson fills perfectly. It is one of the few diving titles out there that everyone should own and, in my view, should be a required text for those diving professionals working in instruction, supervision or sales.
